Valerie + Nick // Dominican Republic // March 2015
Where to begin with Val and Nick. They love life, travel and each other more than anything. They met just after Val sold all of her belongings in Portland planning to move to Hawaii. She moved. Nick soon followed. A year later, again, sold what they had accumulated and traveled literally the world for over a year and got engaged in some foreign country. After their travels they settled back into Portland, but still had an itch for travel. When it came to planning their wedding they knew they wanted a destination.
Val & Nick brought me on board in September 2014 to help them with all of the details. And I’ll be honest, planning from afar was tricky! There was language barriers, time zones and a country I knew nothing about. They had both traveled to the Dominican Republic before so they knew they liked the area. After searching Mexico and Costa Rica, the DR was decided on. Val & Nick wanted their family and friends to go on an adventure with them to witness their wedding and have no distractions but hanging out and having a good time together, and that’s just what happened. They scheduled a welcome gathering at one of the bars at the Now Larimar, a catamaran cruise instead of traditional rehearsal, and most of the other days consisted of lounging pool side together.
I had the privilege of designing their invites, wedding fan programs and welcome cards. Since this was a destination we had to get creative on centerpieces and other details that could be easily packed in a suitcase. We came up with the idea of displaying some of their travel photos in a bucket of sand. Valerie’s mom printed photos from their vacations and stuck them back to back on a skewer stick. She bought galvanized buckets from Michaels craft store that had beach rope handles. Once in the DR we filled the buckets with sand and placed the photos. It was quite simple and easy to pack! I also spray painted different sized tin cans and wrapped them with the left over map envelope liners I had made for their invites, then added a little tropical flower and rope. Once in the DR I filled them with sand and put a LED tea-light in them. Also, so light weight for travel and an easy, affordable project!
Val & Nick supplied turquoise sunglasses for guests to compliment their Bride and Groom glasses. The bouquets and boutonnieres were made by my talented sister Jesi. A one time florist, now a blogger. They were made solely with shells and fake flowers. They turned out so great and also we’re packed into a suitcase for the travel! I’m not sure about the story behind the horse heads, besides I know they made several appearances on their travels together, so I’m assuming fitting to have them at their wedding. The cake topper was a gift, how perfect! They got married on the beach right by the ocean in the white sand. Their reception took place in one of the resorts open air restaurants right next to the pool and beach. Val & Nick also set up a Photo Booth at their reception and brought all of their props, this was a hit!
The next morning they did a trash the dress session with their bridal party complete with swimming in the ocean and jumping in the pool. Val & Nick’s energy is contagious and it’s hard not to be around them and not laugh and smile. Their wedding was so perfect and fit their personality. They made it their own and didn’t worry about traditions. There was about 50 guests that made the travel from the Pacific Northwest, California, Tennessee and Virginia. This just showed how many friends and family they have that supports their love and took the time out of their lives to travel the distance to be present for the occasion. It was an honor to be a part of the celebration and get to travel and spend the week with them and their closest family and friends. I wish them many more adventures as they travel through life as Mr. & Mrs!
